Who is Mindy Kaling?

Mindy Kaling was born in Massachusetts on June 24, 1979, to Indian immigrant parents. She had always expressed an interest in comedy and honed her skills during her time at Dartmouth College. There, she joined an improvisational comedy troupe and wrote for the university’s humor magazine, the Dartmouth Jack-O-Lantern. She later graduated in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in playwriting.

 

Kaling got her start in show business when she interned for The Late Night Show with Conan O’Brien. After graduation, she promptly moved to New York and began working as a production assistant for other television shows and performing her stand-up shows. She toured nationwide, creating friendships with other budding Hollywood comedians such as Craig Robinson.

 

She is most known for her time on the hit TV show The Office. In 2004, she was chosen as one of the lead writers for the American remake of the British TV show. Greg Daniels, the show producer, praised her for her originality and witty writing style. She also joined the cast as an actress, playing the bubbly customer service representative Kelly Kapoor. How did she achieve her weight loss?

Kaling confessed that she had struggled with her weight at different points in her life. She faced bullying throughout high school and lost a huge amount of weight. When she gained it back later when her Hollywood career started to take off, and she became the subject of many internet trolls. At one point, the comedian even shared that a colleague joked about her weight, underscoring just how many oddly fixated on her fuller figure. Contrary to what critics may have said, though, in the overweight vs obesity scale, Kaling was only ever overweight. Despite its prevalence, with 32% of American adults qualifying as overweight, this meant that Kaling had a greater risk of developing health conditions such as heart disease and high blood pressure. With two young kids aged 5 and 2, it’s no wonder why Kaling decided to make a change and reduce the chances of health risks.

 

The 43-year-old mom lost 30 pounds through sustainable weight loss methods. Though many speculated that she achieved it with the help of medical intervention, Kaling says that the process was far simpler. She was mainly successful due to strict portion control. She says she employed a non-restrictive diet that allowed her to eat what she wanted, only less. Thus, she still considers herself a foodie.

 

Another big change that she went through is that she has decided to stop viewing exercise as a punishment.’ She tries to hike or run at least 20 miles per week. When asked how the mother of two manages to fit this into a busy schedule, she answered that she sacrifices time spent scrolling on social media and decides to go outside and be active instead. This isn’t her only form of exercise, though, as she now enjoys trying new activities for weight maintenance. She describes herself as a ‘workout hobbyist,’ ranging from doing tai chi to pilates to strength training.

Just this May 2023, Mindy Kaling revealed a collaboration with Andie Swim for a swimwear collection that is meant to be flattering on all body types. She says that these days, she feels really confident in her body, which hasn’t always been the case. Currently, she states that she feels happy with her lifestyle and that she feels great.
